When I draw caricatures, I take a quick look at the subject then put my head down and draw them without looking again. The reason I do this is because the details of the subject get in the way of exaggerating their more notable features and the subjects end up looking too realistic. When I take a quick look, my brain only holds on to the most prominent bits of information so naturally, I draw those and the rest of the features take a back seat.
